August 2021
In August of 2021 we headed up to Temecula, CA to the Peltzer Family Cellars where we had one of our hottest experiences to date: painting a mural, on the exterior of a train caboose, in 100 degree weather. This vineyard wanted an Instagram-friendly mural that would help increase its digital footprint and provide a photo opportunity for visitors. This was easy enough to design, but getting the mural installed was a different story.
Before we could start the painting process, first we had to prime the entire metal surface of the caboose with an anti-rust paint to ensure the longevity of the design. We actually had to do this multiple times, and add several coats, to make sure our painting surface was streak free and even. Once it was time to start installing the design, we faced our next challenge: the heat. Painting on a metal surface in 100 degree weather is no joke! The metal absorbs heats, so it was very hot to the touch. You have no idea how often you touch a wall while painting, until you get a burn every time you do.
Despite feeling like we were going to pass out several times throughout this two-day job, we stayed hydrated, covered in SPF, and did our best to paint during times when the train wasn’t getting hit with direct sunlight (hello 5am wakeup call!). All said and done, the clients were really happy with the mural, and we left feeling inspired to paint more differently shaped objects like this… planes, trains, automobiles, we’re ready!
