The Melt
Client: The Melt
Location: San Diego, California
Summer 2021
Say cheeeeese!
We were hired to paint the interior walls of The Melt, a fast-casual restaurant that was opening a new location in the Gaslamp Quarter in our hometown of San Diego. This was a fun project for us because:
1. Who doesn’t want to paint cheese all day?
2. It was a sign painting gig, which means that the client provides the artwork, and we just get to go to town painting it.
While sign painting gigs are great because they can cut out a lot of the typical pre-work of installing a mural (design, revisions, etc.), the hours we gained not having to work revisions we more than made up for during installation. The wall we worked on was so big that it required scaffolding that straddled the kitchen area, meaning there were times that we had to bend at some awkward angles. The ceiling was filled with vintage chandeliers that we had to pull out of the way while we painted, and since the restaurant was still in the construction phase, we painted without power, using only a generator to light our work space. Finally, the details of the art they gave us were tiny…. From the seeds in tomato slices to shading on mushrooms, we had to use very fine brushes to achieve the look we were going for.
Though the technicalities of this job were a challenge to maneuver, we love how the final piece turned out. Check it out and tell us you’re not not craving a burger!
