Did you know that humans smell differently out of their left and right nostrils? This is our favorite fun fact from the bourbon tasting that we did at the Stitzer-Weller Distillery in Louisville, the site of one of our most detailed murals yet!
In December 2021, we flew east to Kentucky to install a mural on the inside of a tasting room. While we typically work with the mentality of “it doesn’t have to be perfect” (nothing in life is!), this mural was a little different. Stitzer-Weller’s legal team put together a pretty detailed timeline with dates and verbiage that we had to get right, and the lines and font all had to be uniform to make the timeline look very cohesive. There was really no room for error here, so we hired the help of three local woman (shout out @thetiptoncreative and @pinkmerldesignco!) to help get the mural installed perfectly. We used a LOT of Frog Tape, a bunch of different sized brushes, and some sips of bourbon to get this mural up… and we’re pretty happy with how it turned out!
Some insight when working with brands that have a very strong identity, like Stitzer-Weller Distillery? There isn’t too much space for wiggle room. We had to use the brand fonts in the design, where typically we draw up our own custom lettering. We also had to use specific colors and include quite a few logos in the design. It’s always a creative challenge to come up with something interesting to look at, while also fitting in with a business’ brand standards. As artists, it can be very tempting to want to invoke your own style into every project, or think outside the box to feel like you’re creating something unique. But in cases like this mural, sticking to the rules and coloring inside the lines is exactly what the client wanted - so that’s what we provided! Don’t overthink it and do the best you can with what the client asks for, and most of the time they will be very happy with the final outcome.
